What Is a Valve and What Does It Do?
A valve is a mechanical door in the cylinder head that opens and closes the passage leading to the combustion chamber. When open, it lets the air-fuel mixture in or lets exhaust gas out. When closed, it must seal tightly so compression pressure doesn't leak — and it's that compression pressure that lets the engine produce power at its best.
Two Valve Types in Every Cylinder
Each cylinder generally has at least one pair of valves with opposite jobs.
Intake Valve
Opens during the intake stroke to let the air-fuel mixture into the combustion chamber, then seals shut before compression begins.
Exhaust Valve
Opens after combustion is complete to release the burned gas, working at much higher temperatures than the intake valve.
Valve Components
A valve and its actuation system are made up of several parts that work together as one unit.
Valve Head
The wide, disc-shaped part that seals against the seat. Its face must be perfectly flat so compression doesn't leak.
Valve Stem
The slender shaft that slides up and down inside the valve guide, transferring motion from the tappet/rocker to the valve head.
Valve Spring
Keeps pulling the valve back shut after the camshaft forces it open, and keeps it in contact with the cam so it doesn't "float" at high RPM.
Valve Seat
The ring in the cylinder head where the valve face seals. A worn seat is one of the main causes of compression leaks.
